formative k-pop ships

sunkissera few weeks ago I went on a little trip down memory lane watching old got7 stages and got reminded of how they started me on my ao3 and kpop shipping journey so I started reminiscing and thought making one of these posts would be fun! bc what's better than psychoanalysing yourself and your taste in rpf ships amirite?
regrettably these are all boygroups bc I haven't really dabbled into gg ficdom even though it's something I've wanted to do for the longest time. out of all the ggs I currently stan the one I have the strongest shipping feelings abt is aespa but I have not looked into their ao3 tag yet and that's usually how I solidify my taste, so I'll try to do that sometime soon T__T
anyway this is lowkey a look at my kpop stan history but through a shipping lense so let's get into it!
bias: j-hope 🐿️
I'll try to go through these as chronologically as possible but also I have shit memory so... anyway! I, like a bunch of people, got into kpop through bts lol but it was right before armys turned… like that… so it was a very short lived stanship and idk if it's the somewhat bitter ex-army in me tainting my memory but I don't think I really felt that strongly towards any bts ships. maybe namjin and sope were the most special to me? but I still wasn't that into bts ships. but that was also my pre-ao3 era so maybe it has something to do with that. I mostly just read oc fics on wattpad TAT

ah. literally the reason I started using ao3. I honestly don't know what switch flipped in me (maybe it was the fact that got7 themselves promoted shipping? lol) but I got sooooo into got7 ships, like they made me feel seriously fucking insane, and honestly whenever I watch their stages/videos again I still feel some of the 2jaeyoung feralness reawaken in me, but I'll talk about that more in a little bit
2jae: this was literally the most formative ship out of all of the ones in this list. ur favorite hyung having a soft spot for u is That Serious. I honestly can't remember all the intricacies abt their dynamics bc this was so long ago but smth about their personalities and the way they interacted w each other really drove me crazy (positive). also can we talk abt 1.31 a.m. and how they had to perform without each other a few times the #drama of it all had me fucking going Through it
2jaeyoung: arguably the second most formative ship out of all of these and also the first time I got Really into poly (which is still one of my faves to this day <3). I wasn't even that much of a jjp shipper but somehow the addition of youngjae to the equation just Did it for me. married couple adopts loud and bright eyed baby boyfriend???? it was Everything to me. idt I've ever found another ship with this same exact vibes
yugbam: the very start of my maknaeshipping crimes but what is it about maknaes and being #soulmates. also can we talk about the yugbam stan to chenji stan pipeline????? tbh I have nothing more to say about them except for the fact that being #soulmates #destined #fated #partnersincrime etc. is very attractive to me in a ship. I'm not immune
I was kind of a youngjae haremist looking back on it. like I could read him with anyone, but honestly got7 was a group i could read fic for Literally Any Pairing and thoroughly enjoy. probably the only group where it's happened to me aside from maybe dream. I still had my favorites though, mainly jinson, jingyeom, markyoung… smth smth bickering domestic couples smth smth i guess…
on a side note I'm so fucking sad that i didn't know how fucking BOOKMARKS worked back then because I read so much fucking incredible got7 fic back in the day that i can no longer find… I feel like this post could've been sm better if I could've re-read some of that fic T__T

tbh, monsta x also didn't really inspire many special feelings in me in terms of shipping even though they're a highly shippable group. I was mostly just a changkyun haremist tbh and whenever I would read their fic (which wasn't often) I would just read ships with him in it, mostly changkyun/wonho, changki and jookyun (another case of #maknaeshipping and ik they have their history but I'm still v much convinced they're soulmates sawry).
I really didn't read any other pairings aside from those ?? I might've read some showho or showki which were the only other ships I found interesting (again w the bickering married couple [showki] and the domesticity [showho]) but in essence I just had changkyun tunnel vision. maybe that's why my real downfall and guilty pleasure was always reading no.mercy fic. oops

another highly shippable group but unfortunately I was very picky ? I'm not sure why.
I had my second "this ship drives me fucking insane" phase for SOONCHAN, my most beloveds. again, being your favorite hyung's favorite dongsaeng is That Serious sometimes. also their bond just makes me feel so crazy still to this day like the absolute adoration they have for each other?;!??"? [dies]
anyway I wouldn't say I was a chan haremist but I still did favor fics and ships with chan in them lol. I did my fair share of verkwanchan readings (for some reason i didn't like verkwan alone as much,,, I liked them much better as a side ship), gyuchan, verchan, wonchan... I think those were the ones I read the most aside from soonchan. I was also into the classic junhao (once again it's something about the #soulmates)
jihoon/jun was also a ship I was weirdly really into ??? it's been so long that I can't exactly describe their vibes but the way their personalities are so different but they still Click so well… their dynamic is soooo good… ALSO THEIR HEIGHT DIFFERENCE once again I'm not immune
other honorable mentions are soonwoo (soft idiot best friends), seoksoon (also soft idiot best friends), jihoon/seokmin (sunshine x sunshine protector anyone?), literally any 97z x 97z ship and ESPECIALLY if they were poly. basically I tended to ship by age lines a lot. I'm guilty of meanie shipping crimes as well (i think they changed their ship name tho?? i wouldn't know).
I'm not that deep into caratism anymore but I get the vibes that 95z shipping isn't that popular anymore but jeongcheolsoo and all their iterations were one of my most read ships back in the day lol. as well as poly perf unit <3 my two most beloved poly ships <3 and also jun/minghao/mingyu/wonwoo which I fell into thanks to one specific series that made me realize they're such a perfect polycule????
I feel like more than actually reflecting on my taste, I just re-lived which ships made me feel absolutely insane at the given time lol. but in general I guess hyungs who love their maknaes are just That Serious to me… and also bickering married couples, domestic couples and actual literal soulmates… I'd say that pretty much summarizes my most basic tastes and maybe there IS a pattern because I can also see it mostly reflected in my current ships (rensung, dotae, renhyuck, nomin, etc) … tho I feel like my taste still changed a little once I started stanning nct lol … maybe I should make a separate post on that. because there's Way Too Many nct ships to unpack here.
I'm so bad at analyzing and putting dynamics into words I feel like this post is kind of underwhelming.. but at least I got to unpack some good old nostalgia
